Chapter 10

When I got back to Queen of Tarts, I found Shakes busy reading his book.

“Are you enjoying it?” I asked as I headed to the kitchen and threw a TV dinner into the microwave.

“I don’t know. It’s weird. It feels strange to have a book where rabbits are the main character. After all, what kind of main character is a rabbit? They’re boring, and they’re not at all like how they portray them in this book. They just sit around and eat grass all day. Who wants to read about that?”

“No one, which is why in that book, they have adventures.”

“Yes, but rabbits are so boring. They should have used cats. Everyone would believe the cats go on adventure. We’re an adventurous species.”

“You literally sit in here all day reading books. When was the last time you left this apartment? You don’t have adventures; I’m sorry to break it to you.”

“Wow, so that’s what you really think, is it? You’ve betrayed me, the way Saruman betrayed Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings.”

“I’m just telling you the truth. Besides, there is a cat in Watership Down, isn’t there?”

“I haven’t gotten that far yet.”

“Okay, well, when you do, then you can tell me what you think about their portrayal, okay?”

“I will.” Shakes narrowed his eyes.

“Are you going to keep reading about the boring rabbits?”

“I guess so. It is true that these particular rabbits are having an adventure. Still, I bet in real life, they’d be caught by one of my brethren in an instant.”

“I guess that’s why it’s a book, then.”

“Has anyone written a book from the perspective of a cat?”

I paused and thought for a second. “I think there’s one. Written by a man in Japan.”

“Well, I bet that’s a better book. A cat would make a good main character.”

“If you want, I’ll download you a translated version next. Unless you happen to be able to read Japanese too.”

“Sadly, no. But I want to read books where the cats are the main characters.”

“Alright. I got you covered.”

I desperately wanted to go back and read my own adventure—the one that involved Diane and whose ending I already knew. But I also had to look into Apollo. Do some research. Find out what I could about the god before the twenty-first century.

I promised myself I could read one entry if I looked into the old gods first. So I pulled out my laptop and started searching.

It turned out that Apollo was a lot more than just the god of the sun in Ancient Greece. He was also a god of archery, of music and dance, of poetry, of disease, and of a laundry list of other things. Apparently, he was busy. He was also considered to be the most beautiful of all the gods, and having laid eyes on him, I understood why.

Apollo was the god whose temple at Delphi was home to the Oracle who made predictions about the future, which were, as far as I understood it, not widely accepted by the humans.
